A New Mexico witness driving south of Hatch reported watching and photographing an “extremely large, completely black” object hovering in the sky that could not be identified, according to testimony in Case 62646 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.
The witness was driving at 4:30 p.m. on January 15, 2015, when the object was first seen.
“I continued to monitor it as we drove and eventually took I-10 westbound and the entire time I was going through what it could possibly be,” the witness stated.
The witness attempted to identify the object.
“Would a helicopter hover hundreds of feet for approximately an hour? I don’t know much about helicopters, so I don’t know. Could it be a weather balloon? Maybe, but it seemed extremely large and completely black. I am so very curious about what it could be and I felt a frustration at not being able to identify it.”
The witness pulled over for gasoline along westbound I-10 for about 15 minutes.
“When we came out of the gas station 10 minutes later, it was gone.”

My wife and I were driving back to Phoenix from San Antonio TX on Sunday Dec. 28, 2014. About 30 miles west of Las Cruces NM on I-10 at approximately 4:00 pm, I noticed an object hovering over a mountain chain off to our left in the distance. As my wife was driving, I was able to observe the object for a very long time. Being an aeronautical engineer with a commercial instrument flight rating, I attempted to rationalize the sighting. I thought perhaps we were heading west bound and so was the aerial craft, which would explain the lack of motion in the sky. However, there were no position lights visible and the relative size of the craft was not decreasing. As we came closer to an abeam position with the mountain chain, the craft was still in the sky, at the same perceived altitude and motionless. The only thing that I could think that it could be was a border patrol drone, as that location was close to the border. The object that I was observing looked like the third picture in this article, i.e., the one taken at the rest stop.
Pretty Sure I’ve seen the same thing. I call it a square floating object. I wish I stopped and took more videos, but I do have some videos and photos. Trying to share to people after a few years of this on my mind. Didn’t know people seen similar things.
