On Wednesday, November 21, the website io9.com posted a story about one of the more unusual UFO sightings of the year. As the site described, this “utterly bizarre” UFO was captured on video over Milwaukie, Oregon on September 6, 2012.
The sighting was reported to the Oregon section of the Mutual UFO Network. The Oregon MUFON case study explains that witness Don Andersberg recorded video of
a small, transforming, odd, colorful, compact UFO from his backyard in blue sky daylight. The constantly transforming compact UFO showed oddly growing and transforming protuberances with occasional “flaring up” bright spots. He first saw the UFO and then began video-recording it as it moved along slowly in the sky.
These “growing and transforming protuberances” inspired the witness to name the object the “Sprouting Potato” UFO. The two minute and thirty-four second video recorded by the witness on his Nikon Coolpix P510 camera shows the object has “no particular axis of rotation,” and it “seems to be tumbling in a random fashion.”
Although the odd-looking object resembles and behaves like an animal or character-shaped balloon, Oregon MUFON has concluded that the object is likely an extraterrestrial UFO that mimics a balloon.

We’re sure this isn’t another bundle or bunch of various colored and sized party balloons tied together? I’ve seen that so many times. And it makes “ufologists” look like dodos.
It sure looks like an animal or character shaped balloon, and the described behavior seems to match as well. But Oregon MUFON seems to think the observed “flaring up” was something other than the sun’s reflection, and that the observed “growing and transforming” was something other than deflated segments of a balloon moving with the wind. It seems odd to me to dismiss the balloon possibility, and at the same time, so easily embrace the idea of a “balloon mimic UFO.”
I’ve seen other video of the same phenomenon , but not as colorful. The changing the morphing and the bright light flares, certainly not just balloons. I think one of the more interesting ufo’s. Could be some sort of inter dimensional organic intelligence… or something beyond what we can comprehend.
It is probably a turkey shaped balloon or something along those lines. It would be nice to see the video. Balloons can be extremely tricky to identify and much of the time appear to “morph” and reflect light in strange ways. I have had my share of weird balloon sightings. Most of my sky watching has yielded photos and video that are filled with balloons and other inflated objects.
I am open to the balloon mimicking theory based on my own strange balloon observations however, it doesn’t help advance our understanding of anomalous objects. Seeing a real UFO (Unidentified Flying/Floating Object) is indeed quite rare. Having any of these objects potentially be non terrestrial is even more rare. I have been monitoring the sky w/ excellent photo equipment for the last year and half and what I am finding is UFO’s like to appear in front of crappy equipment at great distances. When you get higher detailed data, the majority of the most interesting sightings tends to be balloons of all shapes, colors, and sizes. Having said that, I have encountered objects I still haven’t been able to properly explain.
The world is looking for proof of what is appearing in earths atmosphere and there are many of us out here studying the sky trying to gather some valuable data that can then be scientifically scrutinized.
