Mysterious UFO appears on Mississippi trail camera

Owners of a trail camera were perplexed when they discovered it had taken photos of strange lights on the night of February 16.

Rainer and Edith Shattles live on 150 acres in the Cumbest Bluff area of Jackson County, Mississippi. They have trail cameras set up around the property to view the various wildlife regularly seen in the area. The cameras took photos of deer on February 16, but strange lights appear in some of the photos.

ABC affiliate WLOX describes:

The timeline of the pictures is clear. At 7:24pm, deer appear and all is normal. At 7:29, a dim light appears. At 7:35, it gets brighter. Then at 7:53, a weird shape appears on the camera. The deer are lit up brightly, but how? The cameras are infrared and don’t emit light. At 7:56, another sharper light appears, then it gets much closer, seemingly focused on the deer. It looks like headlights, but well off the ground and there is no road. It then flies away.

In another photo, a deer appears to be looking at an unknown light source.

Mr. Shattles is puzzled by the mysterious lights, but he doesn’t think extraterrestrials are responsible. He explains to WLOX, “Well, if it’s alien, I’m not sure about that. But it’s definitely a UFO. Now whether it’s a government drone or what, I wish if nothing else, one of them would step up and say, ‘Yes, that’s ours.'”

  1. Please explain how the object appears behind the deer yet the camera-side of the deer are illuminated as if by a second light source! Is this how an infra-red camera records ordinary (not hot) light? Doesn’t look right to me.

  2. I’ts easy to see that the ufo is, in fact, the inverse reflection of the deer in the camera lens… We can clearly see the inverse ears and eyes. The reason why the eyes are so bright is because of the infrared camera reflection in the bottom of the eyes. Note that the deer is over expose, this is why the reflected image occur.

Sorry about the poor quality of my english, since i am a french speaking person. I am a big fan of your website.

  3. Sorry but the “UFO” is just a tall pick-up truck with spot lights on the roll bar. A very common thing in the rural South. Here’s a photo: http://www.truckaddons.com/Catalog/subpages/skyjacker/skyjacker-toyota-10.htm

You can turn on the spots without turning on the headlights.

Some guys were out that night looking to poach some deer. If there had been a buck in that herd of does there wouldn’t have been any mystery whatsoever. Spotlighting deer is illegal so nobody is going to come forward. Show that photo to a game warden and he’ll know exactly what it is.

I didn’t see any photos of the lights “flying away”. If the ground was dry there wouldn’t have been tire tracks and as bright as those spotlights are they wouldn’t have been close.

I’d love to see a photo of a real UFO but this one isn’t it.

  4. Hi,
I work in animation and special effects, and I’m a big photo geek.
I’ve watched carefully the photos of these supposed UFO lights. It seems to me that these lights are actually the reflections of the deer’s eyes in the lens of the camera. You can see this aberration in many photos and films where the bright lights produce and mirrored ghost picture in the lens.
The weird shape appearing is easilly recognizable as what some water on the lens can produce.
And finally, the light projected on the deer and the ground, to me is just the flash of the other Infra red camera. If you compare this photo with the other one with the deer faceing the camera, you’ll notice that he’s in the same position.
As much as I believe in UFOs, I think this case is only a misinterpretation of lens flares and reflections.
