UFO on radar at airport in Bremen, Germany

Travel was recently disrupted at Bremen airport in northwestern Germany when a UFO appeared multiple times on radar.

According to German news site The Local, the UFO showed up on the radar at Bremen Airport several times between 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. on Monday, January 6. But the unidentified object was also reportedly seen by air traffic controllers in the airport’s tower, as well as by police officers. Although the object was seen visually by multiple witnesses, no physical description of the UFO has been released. But it was estimated to be flying at a height of approximately 1,000 feet.

Once police had been alerted to the UFO’s presence, they attempted to intercept and identify the craft. A police helicopter searched the area where the aerial object had been reported, but the UFO could not be located.

Because of the UFO’s presence in Bremen airspace, The Local reports that “a flight from Frankfurt had to be canceled and a second flight from Munich was diverted to Hannover,” while “another plane coming from Paris had to stay airborne for a while before it could land.”

An Airbus A320 plane nearly collided with a UFO near Heathrow Airport in London back in July of 2013. But with that event, the only other object that appeared on radar was an aircraft flying at a lower altitude than the passenger plane. That incident was investigated by the UK Airprox Board, a group of aviation experts that meets monthly to review near-miss reports. But the group was unable to identify the UFO that almost crashed into the A320 plane.

Similarly, authorities in Bremen have been unsuccessful in identifying the unauthorized intruder at Bremen Airport.

UPDATE: Witnesses now explain that the object “looked like a plane but was a lot louder.” And, according to The Local, a spokesperson from German Air Traffic Control (DFS) describes, “It had normal lights, red and green, and an approach light on both sides.”

  1. Hello, dear McClellan,

the Bremen incident was in all probability a real UFO encounter. One passenger on the Lufthansa plane said they twice attempted to land (the pilot said their descent was being disturbed by an unlighted helicopter) and that also on the second time they were on a collision course with the object. The pilot stayed 1 hour above the airport before deciding to leave for another airport. (That excludes any aircraft having intruded in that airspace by chance). The controller initially said that something was seen approaching the runway (without lights) that also registered on radar sporadically. (SPIEGEL ONLINE). A police spokesman said that a patrol spotted an object similar to a helicopter over the city, that had strong lights, made no noise and later disappeared in the clouds. (official) There was a discussion on on Youtube channel, and one User had photographed low flying military helicopters (very low) over his house some time before the event (although Bremen does not have its own police helicopter and had to call one in from another city) They also wondered because not a single photo or film was taken. Later reports can be safely assumed to be disinformation, in my humble opinion.

  2. UPDATE2:
Few new hard facts have evolved. I’ve listened to the original statement by the Bremen’s airport spokeswoman, which seemed frank and unrehearsed. (They simply didn’t know, what caused the problem) Bremen police, who I cited in my first comment, are conducting an inquiry, and up to now two dozen witnesses have come forward. A dedicated thread that I followed in a German forum, reaching over 60 pages in a short period is now petering out due to lack of new material. There is neither credible video or photo of the event. According to most, the witness you mention in your update did not see the actual object itself, but probably DLH5MM after the second aborted landing attempt when it was very low (that was the worst affected flight, it had to stay above Bremen airport for over an hour with two aborted landings, – the second in the very last moment before touchdown, – and later landed safely in Hanover.
Contrary to other reports the first incident happened at UTC 17:15, when DLH5MM had to abort its first landing attempt veering sharply north. The second failed landing attempt was more dramatic (17:34), since it had to be aborted in the very last moment, when the pilot has been reported to only narrowly miss an object, that he described as an unlighted helicopter. http://www.spiegel.de/panorama/ufo-in-bremen-zeuge-berichtet-von-unbeleuchtetem-hubschrauber-a-942265.html
Even young Germans are very reluctant to embrace the „extraterrestrial“ hypothesis, so most people in the forum think that the incident was due to a drone (perhaps a military test-drone), as EADS research centre being close by, who are also reported to have developed a “silent” helicopter. But there are a number of strange transponder outages from different civil aircraft, (DLH356 at 17:33) but at least one normal landing took place in that time-window, Ryanair RYR3606 landing at 17:48.
