Fireball UFOs in South Africa
Riaan van Greuning photographed the UFOs, and as he told The Witness, “It was cloudy and the phenomenon was fairly low in the sky. Five of these objects appeared in a matter of 20 minutes.” He further described the objects as slow moving and completely silent.
Witnesses in nearby areas reported seeing strange lights in the sky for the past several nights.
Professor Matie Hoffman from the University of the Free State and the Boyden Observatory told The Witness that the fireballs reminded him of “emergency flares,” and that the objects were “most likely Chinese lanterns.” He did emphasize, however, that the phenomenon was outside his area so expertise, and that his theories were “only as good as any other member of the public.”
While Chinese lanters fit the description and behavior described by Greuning, no official identification has been made.
